This Just In: Preventing Stroke With Diet Or Vitamins – What Works, What Doesn’t

A recent Australian review examined nutrition and preventing stroke. It found: antioxidant vitamins C and E, B vitamins, and calcium do not prevent stroke. (Exception – treating folic acid and D deficiences may be preventative). The Mediterranean Diet, due to its fish and fruit content, reduces stroke. Likewise, the Dash Diet, with lower salt intake, is effective. Heart Drugs in the Media: Hope or Hype?

High levels of bad cholesterol are to blame for so many life-threatening events such as heart attack and stroke. The public has been told that statins are the most potent weapons in this struggle. However, taking a statin may not necessarily help prevent heart disease or any vascular illness any more than lifestyle changes like exercising, losing weight, eating right, controlling blood pressure, stopping smoking.
